In the middle of the summer heat, we got reinforcement at our support department Operation Sales in Uppsala. We are pleased to introduce Emma Simmesgård and warmly welcome her to C2 Vertical Safety!

Since 3 July, Emma has been working at our competent support department Operation Sales in Uppsala. Emma has already got to know most of our customers and is not afraid to tackle all kinds of questions. Do not hesitate to call our support if you have the slightest question about orders, invoices, returns and possible complaints or if you just want some fun facts about what is going on in our training facilities.

Hi Emma, welcome to C2 Vertical Safety, what made you apply for a job with us?
I was curious about the company! I had never heard of vertical security before, which of course sparked my interest. I like that it's a workplace where you get to do a little bit of everything. C2 is a broad yet niche company! Here I get the chance to learn new things and develop. Great variety with very exciting services.

What do you do when you don't answer the C2 support line?
An ideal Sunday afternoon is spent in the forest with my family, or visiting the auction house. On lunch breaks, I go for a run.

Do you have any superpowers?
I bake awesome Finnish sticks!

Did you miss the Keep Zero event on 22 May? It was an informative morning with many good discussions. Participants also got a hands-on demonstration of different methods that can be used in a rescue operation.

The CEO of Håll Nollan, Ulrika Dolietis, started the day by talking about the work of the collaboration group. She invited discussion on how each member can work towards the Håll Nollan vision in their own organisation. James McCracken from C2 Vertical Safety then gave an in-depth insight into risk analyses and what an emergency plan should contain.

The team at C2 Vertical Safety also offered a practical demonstration of picking up and putting down a person in distress. The event ended with a joint lunch where the discussions and exchange of experiences between the participants continued.

Shortages in many workplaces

Calling 112 is not enough when it comes to an emergency at height. Unfortunately, during Mr James' talk, it became clear that many workplaces do not have a rescue plan. Therefore, we feel that we want to draw attention to, or remind people of the importance of both a risk analysis and a rescue plan.

Risk analysis

The risk analysis forms the basis for the choice of method and equipment. Therefore, a documented risk analysis must always be carried out before working in a fall risk environment. Both employers and employees must be involved in work environment management.
Carefully assess the risks and determine what you need to do to eliminate or minimise them. Every workplace and every day is unique, with conditions that can change quickly. So take into account factors such as weather conditions, materials and equipment. But the day-to-day behaviour of the team also matters - someone might be sick or feeling tired. A risk analysis should reflect the whole complex environment and all people involved must be aware of it. Planning and communication are key.

Rescue plan

There should always be a documented rescue plan when starting work at height or in a fall risk environment. Ensure that all persons concerned are aware of the rescue plan. It should describe the appropriate method for lowering a person in distress. It must also specify what should be done before the rescue operation starts. Here are some key questions to help your organisation create a truly safe rescue plan:

• Do you have an established method for rescuing a person in distress at high altitude, for example in a crane cabin?
• Do you know how to transport an injured person?
• Do you have a plan for how to deal with an incident afterwards? Participating in a rescue operation is both physically and mentally demanding.

If C2 Vertical Safety have ever carried out one of your PPE inspections, the chances are that Papertrail, a web system for the management of PPE inspections, has been used to check and log your equipment.

Ben Scholes, CEO of Papertrail as well as a web technology and outdoor enthusiast gives his best tips about PPE inspections!

1. Keep things simple and don’t over complicate, by having a common language amongst the team for the names and storage locations of equipment

2. Set up your inspection processes so everyone understands when equipment needs to be checked, how to check it and what to do if you need to report damaged equipment that needs replacing

3. Have a system that is robust enough for you and your whole team. Don’t rely on one person to update everything, as it might not be easy to understand if they are on holiday, or move to another part of the business

PPE inspections made easy with Papertrail

Papertrail provides notifications and alerts, to make sure that no inspections are overlooked, and ensures that damaged equipment is not used. All records are stored secure in the system should they need to be accessed later, and you can access the records on any desktop computer or via mobile apps for iOS and Android.

Ben explains that using a system such as Papertrail can make PPE inspections more efficient:

– Traditionally businesses use paper check lists or excel spreadsheets to log their inspections. Papertrail is able to demonstrate a number of efficiency savings when it comes to the time it takes for the management of PPE and updating records, with everything stored in the system. Papertrail minimise human errors, makes sure no logs are lost and creates reports for full compliance audits.

Papertrail was developed in the UK in collaboration with a number of different businesses who were managing large inventories of PPE, and required to keep accurate inspection records from a compliance point of view. Within four years, Swedish wind power production will double. This will require at least 750 newly trained wind power technicians - a result of a strong climate and energy policy.

In 2018, Sweden led Europe in terms of investment in onshore wind power. According to the Swedish Wind Energy Association's forecasts, Swedish wind power production will double over the next four years, from the current level of around 19 TWh to around 38 TWh per year. This means that wind power will account for 25 per cent of electricity consumption in Sweden by 2022.

- Since the Energy Agreement was signed, 62 billion euros worth of investments in new wind power have been decided. "This shows the importance of stable political conditions and constructive dialogue between parties. A long-term perspective creates security for investors and producers and the courage to invest," says Charlotte Unger Larson in a press release on the Swedish Wind Energy Association's website.

The Energy Agreement's goal is for Sweden to have a 100 per cent renewable electricity system by 2040, and a large part of that energy will be wind power. According to calculations made by the Swedish Wind Energy Association, this will mean investments of over SEK 200 billion in wind power.

Demand for wind power technicians is increasing

To reach the target, around three thousand new wind turbines will need to be built in the coming decades. This will increase the demand for skilled labour, which is already high. Over the next four years, Sweden will need at least 750 newly trained wind power technicians.

Education and training

C2 Wind Power GWO is a basic training programme for anyone working with the design and maintenance of wind turbines, such as wind turbine technicians, repairers, electricians and others. The training ensures that everyone who works with and in a wind turbine has the same basic knowledge - a common minimum level of knowledge, methodology and safety thinking. Swapping the hot training facility for reality is an important moment for
C2's instructors. This time it was a study visit to Bösjövarden's wind power plant in Dalarna for our eight GWO instructors.

The study day at the Bösjövarden wind farm included orientation and evacuation exercises, as well as in-depth insight into problems and risks. Both new and experienced instructors take part in the study visits and on this day everyone tried climbing the wind turbine and hanging freely at a height of 100 metres. It is important to understand the problems and challenges that wind turbine technicians face in real life. During the day, the team also took the opportunity to test different equipment and methods.
- Technically, the equipment is the same whether you are at six metres or 100 metres. It doesn't really matter, and somewhere you have to rely on the equipment to work. But it's clear that you're extra exposed at really high altitudes and it's natural for your body to react. Even the ropes behave differently at very high altitudes because the length means there is more rocking. That difference from the conditions in our 18-metre-high training facilities is good to experience," says Inga Kazlauskaite, training manager at C2 and participant in the study day.

The study visit to Dalarna is part of the initiative on fall protection in wind power, as C2
expanding both the availability and range of course modules in Uppsala and in Höganäs.

The company Nite Ize is now launching a brand new bag collection that is air and water resistant to IP67. The bags are ideal for harsh environments and wet conditions. They are also equipped with the company's innovative TRU Zip, which makes them very easy to open and close, unlike waterproof bags with traditional roll-top closures.

Waterproofing is a valued feature of sports and outdoor clothing and equipment. They often use waterproof zips, but there is rarely any guarantee that they will stay closed if they get wet. Bara sedan årsskiftet har åtta personer mist livet i en arbetsplatsolycka, varav tre har varit fallolyckor. Dödsolyckor på arbetsplatser blir en av Arbetsmarknadsminister Ylva Johansson (S) mest prioriterade frågor nu – Vi måste komma till skott, säger hon i en intervju med tidningen Arbetet.

Arbetsmarknadsminister Ylva Johansson (S) har bjudit in arbetsmarknadens parter för samtal om dödsolyckorna på arbetet. Det här ser hon som en av sina mest prioriterade frågor, enligt en intervju med tidningen Arbetet.

Vi på C2 ser det som ett ansvar att förmedla kunskap om säkerhet för dig som arbetar på hög höjd och vill därför bjuda in till frukostmöte tillsammans med föreningen Håll nollan. Datum för denna frukost kommer inom kort.

Ett initiativ för noll olyckor i byggbranschen
Håll nollan är ett initiativ av organisationen Samverkan för noll olyckor i byggbranschen, där små och stora företag, som Skanska, PEAB och NCC, byter kunskap i syfte att förbättra både arbetsmiljöer och säkerhet för sina medarbetare.
C2 Verical Safety är en del av samarbetsprojektet som riktar sig till alla företag och organisationer i branschen som antingen beställer, planerar eller utför byggen.

Alla förtjänar en olycksfri vardag. Alla förtjänar en trygg arbetsplats. Det är två grundvärderingar som vi på C2 haft sedan starten.

– På C2 stödjer vi helhjärtat idén om nollvision i olycksstatistiken, och vår tanke med att bli medlemmar i föreningen Håll nollan är att vi vill ge tillbaka något till byggbranschen. Det känner vi att vi gör bäst genom att bidra med vår spetskompetens inom arbete på hög höjd, säger James McCracken, projektledare på C2.

Så jobbar Håll nollan

Ensam är inte stark. Det är Håll nollans övertygelse. Här kan du läsa mer om hur medlemmarna i föreningen jobbar ihop, utifrån fyra övergripande intresseområden.

1. Ledarskap och kultur. Enligt Håll nollan ska arbetsmiljö och säkerhet alltid ha högsta prioritet. För att nå dit krävs det att medlemmarna skapar en sådan kultur och uppmuntrar den sortens ledarskap.

2. Kunskap och kompetens. Medlemmarna ska samla och dela den kunskap som finns i branschen om arbetsmiljö och säkerhet. De ska även upptäcka och fylla igen kunskapsluckor.

3. Gemensamma arbetssätt och standarder. Medlemmarna ska enas om arbetssätt, standarder och lämpliga nyckeltal för arbetsmiljö och säkerhet.

4. Kravställa som beställare. Tillsammans ska medlemmarna sträva efter att god arbetsmiljö och säkerhet är något självklart vid anbud och upphandlingar. De ska även se till att strikt följa upp kraven.

Utöver detta ska Håll nollans medlemmar försöka bilda opinion kring arbetsmiljö och säkerhet hos andra aktörer i samhället. Inte minst inom näringslivet och bland beslutsfattare.

Ska du jobba med vindkraftverk? I så fall bör du certifiera dig enligt Global Wind Organisations internationella säkerhetsstandard. Det gör du genom att gå utbildning enligt GWO-standarden för vindkraft. För att det ska vara mer bekvämt för dig att gå kursen har vi nu GWO-certifierat vår kursanläggning Träningscenter Syd i Höganäs, nordvästra Skåne.
Och du, missa inte heller att vi har nya kurser inom vindkraft på gång!

Förra året mångdubblades satsningarna på vindkraft i Sverige. Vid slutet av 2018 stod vindenergin för cirka elva procent av landets elproduktion. I Skåne planerar man bland annat att börja bygga två stora vindkraftsparker ute till havs under de kommande åren.
Samtidigt är kraven på säkerhet höga i branschen, och alla som arbetar med vindkraftverk behöver följaktligen certifiera sig enligt globala riktlinjer. Det gör du genom att gå kurser enligt GWO standarden.

– Det finns en gemensam internationell standard satt av Global Wind Organisation som varje arbetsgivare känner till. Vi på C2 håller utbildningar i de fyra utbildningsmoduler inom BST (Basic safety training) – First aid, Manual handling, Fire awareness och Working at height. För att kursen ska bli mer lättillgänglig i södra Sverige har vi nu valt att GWO-certifiera vårt träningscenter i Höganäs, berättar Inga Kazlauskaite, utbildningsansvarig på C2.

Förutom baskursen finns det även en repetitionskurs att gå för den som har giltiga GWO certifikat och behöver fräscha upp sin grundkunskap.

Fler moduler på gång

De fyra GWO BST modulerna hålls sedan tidigare av C2 på anläggningen i Uppsala, C2 Training Center. Men målet för C2 är inte bara att bli mer tillgängliga med sitt nuvarande sortiment. Vi vill också kunna erbjuda utbildning inom fler moduler.
– Förra året släppte GWO moduler inom ART, Advanced Rescue Training, och EFA, Enhanced First Aid. Vi har redan påbörjat arbetet med att bredda vårt certifikat, så att vi kan integrera de nya modulerna och även Sea Survival-modulen i vårt utbildningsprogram, förklarar Inga.

Utbildningen Sea Survival riktar sig främst till vindkraftsarbetare offshore, det vill säga till havs.

– Vi tror att ett bredare certifikat och bekvämare avstånd är rätt väg att gå för att kunna möta ett växande behov. Att det byggs mycket innebär ju att det blir fler nyanställningar, vilket i sin tur kräver mer utbildning, säger Inga.

Vänder sig till alla inom vindkraft

C2:s GWO utbildningar är till för alla som arbetar med vindkraftverk. Däribland vindkraftstekniker, reparatörer och elektriker. Utbildningen går till stor del ut på att alla som jobbar runt vindkraftverken ska få ett enhetligt sätt att arbeta med och tänka kring säkerhet. Grunden ska med andra ord vara densamma hos all personal ifråga om strategier och säkerhetstänk.

En kurs i fyra delar – det här är C2 Wind Power GWO

C2:s grundutbildning med inriktning vindkraft pågår under fem dagar och är indelad i fyra kursmoment, så kallade moduler som kan kombineras ihop eller gås var för sig.

1.  First aid/Första hjälpen. I denna modulen lär du akutinsatser för att rädda skadade kollegor i vindkraftverksmiljö. Bland annat får du träna dig i att ge första hjälpen i samband med olyckor. I detta ingår HLR, användning av hjärtstartare och akut sjukvårdsinsats. Modulen omfattar två dagar.
2. Manual handling/Ergonomi och säkerhet. Här lär du dig mer om ergonomi, utrustning och hjälpmedel vid arbete i vindkraftverk. Du får veta hur du arbetar säkert och effektivt. Tidsåtgången är en halv dag.
3. Fire awareness/Brandsäkerhet. I den tredje modulen får du ökad kunskap om brandrisker i vindkraftverk. Du får veta vad du gör ifall något händer, vilken säkerhetsutrustning som finns tillgänglig och hur du använder den. Modulen omfattar en halv arbetsdag.
4. Working at height/Arbete på höjd. Du får lära dig mer om att arbeta på hög höjd i vindkraftverk. Du får träna dig i att jobba med fallskyddsskenor, personlig utrustning samt att evakuera nödställda. Modulen omfattar två dagar.

Kursen ges under hela året i varma lokaler anpassade för färdighetsträning i höghöjdsarbete. C2 står för erfarna instruktörer, utrustning och material. Undervisningsspråk är svenska och engelska.
