Permanent fall protection
If you carry out frequent inspections, assignments or maintenance work on or in buildings, masts or along crane tracks, fixed systems may be a good option for you. We help you develop a solution that suits your needs, carry out a risk analysis, ensure that you and your employees receive the right training, install the system and ensure that statutory checks and inspections are carried out.
We have extensive experience of working with fixed fall protection systems. Both from large events such as the Nobel party in Blåhallen and extensive installations such as in Tele2 Arena. We also work with installations and inspections on and in large industrial buildings. The roof safety system at the nuclear power plant in Studsvik is an example of this.
Common situations where fixed systems can be cost-effective are places that need to be visited with a high frequency but where protection against falls is required but collective solutions cannot be used for protection.
For example:
- Along crane tracks if the overhead crane stops and you have to reach the actual mechanics at the crane.
- On roofs for roof safety during inspections, repairs and short-term maintenance.
- Inside thermal power stations where there are many floors with the need to reach exposed places at gates etc.
- Along vertical ladders in wind turbines or masts
There are several different types of fixed fall protection systems that can be used to secure workplaces at heights. Fixed systems minimise the risks associated with frequently visited workplaces where there is a risk of falling.
Here are some examples of common types of fixed fall protection:
- Horizontal wire system is a common type of fall protection system used on roofs or other heights such as along a traverse. A horizontal wire rope system consists of a rigid cable attached between two fixed points and any intermediate attachments. Workers attach their personal protective equipment using a runner that runs along the cable. This allows staff to move along the cable without having to move their anchor point.
- Horizontal rail system works basically the same way as wire rope systems. The difference is that a rail is less flexible. This means that rail systems are preferable if the system is to be used for work positioning or repair work. The rail can be shaped to follow, for example, the facade of a building and is available in all colours which makes it a very attractive system for access to windows/facades and is often used as a window cleaning system instead of a basket.
- Vertical cable systems are used to secure workers working at heights where there is a need to climb longer distances vertically, for example on a ladder. Vertical wire rope systems consist of a vertical cable between two attachment points and any intermediate attachments. Workers can climb up and down the cable using personal protective equipment and a trolley that locks onto the cable in case of a fall.
- Vertical rail systems are used and installed in the same way as the wire rope. The advantage of rails is that they are less susceptible to high winds in, for example, a telecoms mast. In addition, individual sections can be replaced in case of damage.
- Single points is another type of fall protection system used to protect workers working at heights. A single point consists of a 'loop' to which personal fall protection equipment is attached as an anchor point. Single points can be used alone or in pairs, for example in rope access.
- Guardrails are used to secure workers working on tall buildings or other heights where there is a risk of falling. Guardrails consist of a series of railings mounted around the perimeter of the work area. Workers can work within guardrails without personal protective equipment. Guardrails always provide a lower risk of falling than personal fall protection and are also known as collective fall protection.
These are just a few examples of fixed fall protection systems that can be used to secure workplaces at heights. The choice of fall protection system depends on the specific workplace and the risks associated with the work.
Fall protection systems should be inspected according to the manufacturer's instructions. Usually 1 time per year. Ask us about service agreements.
The assembly of fall protection systems is often complex and requires a holistic approach when working at height. Manufacturers may also require installers to have specific training if the system is of a complex nature.
We are happy to help with everything from design to final inspection.
We have several brands of fixed fall protection systems to choose from and always select the best solution for our customers based on safety, work efficiency, lifespan based on site conditions and cost effectiveness. There are both cable and fixed rail systems in aluminium or stainless steel. It is also possible to get systems in any colour code if there are aesthetic aspects to consider in the project.
Today we use systems from Skylotec, Checkmate, Söll, Harken and others.
Skylotec is today one of the most comprehensive suppliers on the market with coverage of all types of systems that may be needed, from rails to wire, both horizontally and vertically and is usually preferred as they are also very cost-effective and have a wide range of adapters and fittings. See our range of Skylotec fixed fall protection systems here!
We are also distributors in Sweden of Checkmate which is a British security company recognised as an expert in the installation of fixed fall protection systems on historic buildings. Checkmate's fixed systems are currently installed on buildings such as the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. See our range from Checkmate here!
