Firing eights are designed to facilitate safe and controlled repelling and descending by climbers and adventurers. To use a belay device, the climber threads the rope through the centre hole and creates a loop by folding the rope back. By holding the rope and controlling its friction by holding the side holes, the climber can regulate the speed of repelling or descending. By changing the grip and friction, the climber can slow down or stop the movement completely.
